Safety Comparison

The Mustang Premium offers an optional collision warning system, which detects an impending crash through forward mounted sensors and flashes a bright light and sounds a loud, distinctive tone to warn the driver to brake or maneuver immediately to avoid a collision. The Camaro doesn't offer a collision warning system.

The Mustang Premium’s optional blind spot warning system uses digital cameras monitored by computer to alert the driver to moving objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Camaro doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing safer, the Mustang Premium’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Camaro doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Mustang and the Camaro have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability systems to prevent skidding.

Warranty Comparison

The Mustang’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Camaro’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability Comparison

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Mustang have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Camaro.

The Mustang has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Camaro doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the car’s engine.

Engine Comparison

The Mustang GT’s 5.0 DOHC V8 produces 9 more horsepower (435 vs. 426) than the Camaro SS Manual’s optional 6.2 V8.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Mustang GT Auto gets better fuel mileage than the Camaro SS Automatic (16 city/25 hwy vs. 15 city/24 hwy).

The Mustang has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Camaro doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better stopping power the Mustang GT’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Camaro SS:

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Mustang has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Camaro’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Mustang’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Camaro doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Mustang EcoBoost Fastback handles at .96 G’s, while the Camaro SS Coupe pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Mustang GT Fastback executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.9 seconds quicker than the Camaro LT Coupe (24.7 seconds @ .84 average G’s vs. 26.6 seconds @ .67 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Mustang’s turning circle is 1.2 feet tighter than the Camaro’s (36.5 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

Chassis Comparison

For excellent aerodynamics, the Mustang has standard flush composite headlights. The Camaro has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Mustang ECOBoost uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Camaro doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Mustang Fastback has .2 inches more front headroom, 2.1 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more rear legroom and 1.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the Camaro Coupe.

The Mustang Convertible has 2.1 inches more front legroom, .9 inches more rear legroom and 2.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the Camaro Convertible.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

The Mustang Fastback has a much larger trunk than the Camaro Coupe (13.5 vs. 11.3 cubic feet).

The Mustang Convertible has a much larger trunk than the Camaro Convertible with its top down (11.4 vs. 7.8 cubic feet). The Mustang Convertible has a much larger trunk than the Camaro Convertible with its top up (11.4 vs. 10.2 cubic feet).

The Mustang Fastback’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The Camaro Coupe’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

Ergonomics Comparison

When three different drivers share the Mustang Premium, the optional memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Camaro doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Mustang Premium’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Camaro doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

If the windows are left down on the Mustang the driver can raise them all using the keyless remote; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the Camaro can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Intelligent Access standard on the Mustang allows you to unlock the driver’s door, trunk and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. The Chevrolet Camaro doesn’t offer an advanced key system.

The Mustang’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Camaro’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Mustang Premium’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Mustang has standard extendable sun visors. The Camaro doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Mustang Premium’s standard air conditioned front seats cool the driver and front passenger and help take the sting out of hot leather in Summer. The Camaro doesn’t offer air conditioned front seats.

The Mustang Premium’s standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The Camaro doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

The Mustang Premium’s standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The Camaro doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Mustang Premium offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Contr4ol, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Camaro doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

With standard voice command, the Mustang offers the driver hands free control of the radio, climate controls, cell phone and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The Camaro doesn’t offer a voice control system.

Recommendations Comparison

Car and Driver performed a comparison test in its December 2014 issue and the Ford Mustang GT Fastback won out over the Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE.

The Mustang was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 6 of the last 10 years. The Camaro has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Mustang was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” for 3 of the last 19 years. The Camaro hasn’t been picked since 2013.
